    Gallium OS 1.0, Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB30-B-104 Baytrail.Hi, I'm programming an ESP8266 Nodemcu0.9 device from Arduino. That is done via USB.However, I do get an error: error: cannot access /dev/ttyUSB0error: espcommopen failederror: espcommuploadmem failedBefore GaliumOS 1.0 I used Lubuntu 15.10 where it worked flawless.I already tried a 'sudo gpasswd -a dialout', but that didn't help.I tried several nodemcu's by now, restarted my chromebook a couple of times, changed USB cables. To no avail.Edit:My log is incomplete:After connecting the nodemcu I did a 'ls -l /dev/tty.'

    • Note however that in this question, minicom is being run as root using sudo. Generally the preferred solution on access permissions is to assign users who need access to a group which owns the serial port device files and has the needed permission to them - on Ubuntu that is typically 'dialout' – Chris Stratton May 17 '12 at 4:23.

    but did not see the ttyUSB0Then I did a 'sudo ls -l /dev/tty.' and found (among a lot of other entries): crw-rw- 1 root dialout 188, 0 apr 30 21:46 /dev/ttyUSB0I did a 'sudo adduser dialout' but that didn't help.Then I did a 'sudo chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0' and now I could write as normal user to the USB0 port and upload the arduino sketch into the nodemcu.From what I find on Google this has something to do with (incomplete?) udev rules but I have no idea how to patch this myself. It's a common confusion that file permissions can affect listings of directory contents.

    That's how I'm reading your comments, but maybe I'm misunderstanding you.sudo or lack thereof will not change the contents of the directory listing.sudo ls and ls will always show the same list of directory items. Ls will return an error if the user doesn't have adequate directory permissions (read and execute) - but it will not show a different list of items instead. In this case the directory is /dev, which should be r-x for all users.so: same list of files with sudo or without, no errors in either case.Anyway, glad you got it working.:).
